A Winning Line-Up for your Tailgate Party from Fit City.

Soon parking lots on high school and college campuses, as well as in pro football stadiums, will fill with tailgating parties. Shalene McNeill, our Fit City registered dietician, has a game plan to share to make your tailgating party healthy and fun.   Approach your party with a game plan that's delicious and nutritious, and you'll score lots of points with your guests.

  • BRING IN YOUR FIRST STRING PLAYERS. Just like a good coach who starts the game with his first string line-up, bring and serve healthy foods at your tailgate party. Start with lean meats for grilling and fill out your menu with fruits and veggies.
  • Don’t let high calorie or high fat foods make it to the party.
  • MAKE SUBSTITUTIONS. Remember the importance of substitutions--on the field and in the kitchen. As you prepare your favorite tailgating dishes remember that you can save calories by substituting low-fat sour cream and low-fat cream cheese in your dips and other dishes.
  • DON'T GET CALLED FOR PILING ON. Players get penalized for “piling on” a player after the play has ended. Don’t you get caught piling your plate too full of tailgate party fare. Remember portion control.  And, don't let yourself nibble constantly from the serving platter either--it's just as bad a piling on!
