Facts from a 2002 San Antonio Health Assessment:
- 56% sedentary
- 63% overweight or obese
- 32% get NO physical activity (up from 22% in 1998)
- 11% diabetics vs. 6.6% nationwide and third leading cause of death
- Injuries result in the most years of potential lives lost
- 34% of births were to single mothers, an increase from 18% in 1992
- Heart disease is No. 1 killer, followed by cancer
- 26% have high blood pressure
- 67% of those with high cholesterol are treated with drugs, up from 62%
- More than 8% are chronic drinkers (60 drinks/month)
- 32% ages 18 to 25 are binge drinkers (5+ drinks/day)
